The Lemosho Route starts at Londorossi Gate on the western side of the mountain, crosses the Shira Plateau and joins the Machame Route at the Barranco Valley. Its length allows more gradual acclimatisation.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp

    2,100 m → 2,750 m 6 km Montane rainforest

    Drive to Londorossi Gate and walk to the first forest camp.

  2. Day 2

    Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp

    2,750 m → 3,500 m 8 km Moorland

    Leave the forest and cross onto the Shira Plateau.

  3. Day 3

    Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp

    3,500 m → 3,850 m 7 km Moorland

    Gentle plateau crossing with views of Kibo.

  4. Day 4

    Shira 2 to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

    3,850 m → 3,960 m (high point 4,600 m) 10 km Alpine desert

    Acclimatisation day via Lava Tower.

  5. Day 5

    Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

    3,960 m → 4,035 m 5 km Alpine desert

    Barranco Wall and Karanga Valley.

  6. Day 6

    Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

    4,035 m → 4,673 m 4 km Alpine desert

    Short climb to base camp.

  7. Day 7

    Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, descend to Mweka Camp

    4,673 m → 3,100 m (high point 5,895 m) 17 km Arctic to rainforest

    Summit night and descent.

  8. Day 8

    Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

    3,100 m → 1,640 m 10 km Montane rainforest

    Final descent and transfer to Moshi.
