Overview

The Marangu Route uses the mountain huts at Mandara, Horombo and Kibo rather than tents. It is the shortest route in days, which also gives the least time to acclimatise.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

    1,860 m → 2,700 m 8 km Montane rainforest

    Forest walk to the Mandara huts.

  2. Day 2

    Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

    2,700 m → 3,720 m 12 km Moorland

    Cross the moorland with views of Kibo and Mawenzi.

  3. Day 3

    Horombo Hut acclimatisation day

    3,720 m → 3,720 m (high point 4,200 m) 6 km Moorland

    Optional walk towards Mawenzi (Zebra Rocks) and return.

  4. Day 4

    Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

    3,720 m → 4,700 m 10 km Alpine desert

    Cross the Saddle to Kibo Hut.

  5. Day 5

    Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, descend to Horombo Hut

    4,700 m → 3,720 m (high point 5,895 m) 21 km Arctic to moorland

    Summit via Gilman's Point and long descent.

  6. Day 6

    Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

    3,720 m → 1,860 m 20 km Moorland to rainforest

    Descend to the gate and transfer to Moshi.
